256 GB Slim SSD!?
Posted by Lockergnome
Samsung have done it again - forced 256 GB of data storage onto a slim SSD (solid state drive). Amazing! These drives are so small and efficient, and its truly amazing to see that much storage space on a drive so small - this technology is really advancing. Maybe SSDs will get so good they will take over HDDs (hard disk drives) in the future? Well, that’s not going to happen any time soon, because of the cost. This new SSD will cost around $1000, and will probably only be available in premium priced laptops as-well, making it a no-go for the budget buyer. But SSD prices are steadily decreasing, and i think we will see more of them in the future.
The new 2.5-inch SSD will start to be produced by the end of 2008. An even more impressive 1.8-inch version is expected during the fourth quarter of 2008. The new SSD uses the SATA II interface, making it extremely fast and efficient, and due to the fact that the SSD has no moving parts, unlike the HDD, it is more reliable and gives better performance.
Well done, Samsung!
